Most consumers don’t realize the extent to which their personal data is highly valued by parties they might not think about.

Microsoft took a stance last week that pushed this issue into the limelight yet again. The software giant filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Justice Department asking for the right to be able to inform its customers any time law enforcement officials request their emails or other data.

Microsoft contends that the Justice Department inappropriately uses the 30-year-old Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) to compel data storage, email, and internet service providers into turning over consumer data for criminal investigations.
