DAM vs CMS
The DAM vs CMS question sets two complementary tools against each other that do not manage the same object. A digital asset management system (DAM) manages media files with their metadata, versions and usage rights. A content management system (CMS) manages editorial content, its approval and its publication.
Definition and how it works
The useful decision is where the master file lives. As long as a single site uses its images with no rights constraints, the CMS media library can be enough. When the same media serve several sites, campaigns and partners with rights that have an end date, the DAM becomes the source of truth and the CMS uses it.
How the two tools complement each other is covered on our page DAM vs CMS: why choose?
The differences in detail
A CMS media library does not bring the dated usage rights management of a DAM. In a headless CMS architecture, both systems deliver through APIs and the boundary stays where it was. The front end receives the text and a reference to the asset from the CMS, then fetches the file from the DAM.
| Tool | What it manages |
|---|---|
| DAM | Media, their metadata, renditions and usage rights. |
| CMS | Editorial content, its approval and publication. |
| CMS media library | Stores and files documents. Having one does not demonstrate the governance capabilities of a DAM. |
Frequently asked questions
Can a website use both a DAM and a CMS?
Yes. You then need to decide where the original file lives and how the CMS accesses it. By reference, a single source remains and a removal in the DAM carries through to every page. By copy, the site becomes independent, but each copy has to be found by hand.
Where do the caption, alt text and credit of an image belong?
The photo credit and the license describe the file wherever it appears, so they live in the DAM. The caption can depend on the page using the image, in which case it lives on the CMS side. Alt text that actually serves accessibility depends on the image’s role on the page, which only the editor knows.
