Is Jahia CrippleWare ?

by  sly »  2011/07/12 16:24

Hello,

After using Jahia 6.5 I'm starting to worry about the fact that there is some module that are not available to the community edition, and that those module could be indispensable to work corectly with Jahia.

As far as I saw, there is the "Role" and "Workflow" management module that are not available.

Can you confirm this fact ? Is there a work around ?

Are there other module that I'm not aware of ?

What is the plan of "Jahia SA" about this trend, and why do you do that ? What is the point of using GPL if you do that ?

Sly, who is questionning his choice of Jahi as a true opensource.

    Hello Sly,
Thank you for your feedback. We are currently working on making our offering easier to understand.
Using our community package, you will be able to create an unlimited number enterprise website using the embedded workflow and roles (reader, jahiapp-user, owner, privileged, contributor, editor, reviewer, editor-in-chef, translator). You will be also able to use the permissions inheritance. (Please check the attached screenshot) You are also able to create an unlimited number of new groups. The one step workflow is also provided in the community offering. The package provided on the website is completely free and under the GPL.
However we also provide an enterprise offering - under JSEL, which add tools to :
    -create new workflows
    -create new roles
    -connect to LDAP
-configuration tools to connect to an advanced database stack
-configuration tools to use advanced application stack
-configuration tools to setup jahia in cluster

This offering is essentially the community package but with additional tools.
MySQL provides this kind of offering : the core  system is released under GPL and completely free to use, the enterpise vesion includes the community plus some additional tools (monitoring and replication).
Using our software let you have for free an enterprise quality grade software, without paying for stuff that you usually don't need (3 steps workflows, JBoss application server support, etc.)
What exactly is blocking you on the community package ?
    Best regards

    Thanks for your reply.

I'm working on a more horizontal structure, so i might have to invent new kind of workflow than the clasical hierarchical one.

Also the fact that only the root can create account is not practical.

There should be one role for that, and a way for someone to request a creation of and account could be great.
