Adding a custom locale

by  rvt »  2011/06/07 18:03

Hello!

I was wondering if it's possible to add custom locales, for example en-DE to Jahia and if so, how?
I have searched through the Jahia source code but I kinda get the feeling all locales that are available are the same that are available to the os, is this correct?

    Hello Ries,

this is more or less correct. The list of locale-country combinations is coming from the JDK, you are using.
But I do not see any technical problems in having en_DE, for example.
Could you, please, give some insights on the rationale for having English language combined with Germany as a country? smiley

    Thank you in advance!
    Sergiy

    Sergiy,

this would happen for example with a brochure that needs to be available in English but is tied towards Germany but the same brochure would also be available in the UK. Both are the same brochure bit might show different content.

In our case we have a intranet database with these custom locales already be defined and if we could make them compatible this this would be great.

    Hello Ries,

I remember we looked for some client at the ICU4J library to be able to plugin more languages, but I don't know exactly if they used it or not, but it looked like an interesting way to extend what the JDK offers : http://site.icu-project.org/

    Hi Ries,

from JDK6 onwards Oracle/Sun is providing a Locale-sensitive Service SPI (Service Provider Interface) in order to plug-in locale-dependent data and services into the JVM. This is not only for the missing languages, countries and variants of the Locale class, but also for other services (like number formats, date formats and naming, collators to define sorting rules,...).

    Here is more info: http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutor ... vices.html and: http://java.sun.com/developer/technical ... n_enhance/
The Oracle forum for Internationalization (I18N) has also good infos: http://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=957
