Remote Publishing to a Staging site on the same server

by  mrenion »  2016/01/14 18:06

Hello.

I started setting up a "staging" site on our test server.  I want the staging site to be a separate site from the Live site but still be on the same environment.  Documentation on this said that this can be done for testing purposes.  And while I'm testing this out, I'm running into issues with referenced images, they don't get published to the staging site, and other content related issues that I don't see happening when publishing to the Live site.

Has anyone done this before?  And do I need to do any config changes or setup to make this successfully work?  Or do I have to setup the publishing target to an entirely different server?  I'm trying to find documentation on this (how to setup the actual remote target server) but only found one for setting up using Remote Publication Manager.

Thanks,
Maricar

Hi Maricar,

Did you publish the image itself, means in document manager when you upload the image. Because when you just use a reference to the image, it is  possible that the image itself is not published, and so it is not working for the remote publication. The problem with the reference when you are using the same server is that the image is not remote published, only the reference, so the image would be the same for both webprojects.

A seperate server is recommended because the content of the remote published webproject is only available in live workspace. But usually it should work on the same einvironment too (except with some restrictions, that some references are not completly remote published (as you see on the image example), in that case you have to make sure that the references are published well).

have a nice day,

Werner

So, maybe my question would be how do we best provide a "staging" environment for our content owner?  We need our staging site to be the exact copy of of our LIVE site -- thus the attempt to use Remote Publication.  The purpose of the Staging site is for our content owner to be able to view the site as it would be on LIVE without publishing the changes yet to LIVE -- mostly for security reasons, we have implemented custom security for personalized content that doesn't utlize Jahia's ACL.

My thought is, remote publication would be the ideal approach. Have the existing LIVE site as is, and use remote setup to pubish the same set of content to a "staging" URL.  Is this something we can do?  Or, is there a better way to do this?  Have you seen this done before?

Essentially, have one source web project publishing to LIVE (actual production site) and publishing to Staging.

Thanks,

Maricar
