Jahia and PHP/Quercus

by  drietsch »  2011/06/07 18:31

Dear Jahia-Team!

We are just in the process of evaluating CMS systems and Jahia looks very promising and it's user interface and editing concepts are very deliberated. We are currently working with two seperate content management system architecures: Magnolia and OpenCMS as JAVA-Systems and Typo3 and eZ Publish as PHP systems.

We want to streamline this process and consolidate our content management systems. As our team is split between hard core JAVA developers and PHP template coders, we still want to use both teams' skills.

I've read though your documentation and also installed the community edition. I've seen that JSP is used as the template language. As there are by far more capable PHP developers than JSP devs out there, would it be possible (I've not yet talked to my JAVA guys...) to integrate another template system (for example based on Quercus (http://quercus.caucho.com/) or Project Zero (http://www.projectzero.org/)?

We think that this would actually be a great benefit for Jahia and would address a whole new target group. Ez Publish and Typo3 just have a huge reach within the CMS market and are also moving to the enterprise class. But many agencies are currently frustrated with these CMS systems, as they don't comply with standards - as Jahia does. Still they cannot switch to other CMS systems, because they currently have a strong troop of PHP developers, doing the everyday templating stuff. So if - just - Jahia templating would be possible with PHP/Quercus, that would solve a lot of issues and would make it possible to combine both JAVA and PHP.

If this would be in a way interesting for you, we would of course like to help.

Best regards

Dietmar

Hello Dietmar,

thanks for your interest and for considering and evaluating Jahia. I am a software architect working at the Jahia office in Klagenfurt (so according to your Twitter account not too far away from you ;) ).

The Jahia 6 architecture allows to quite easily integrate PHP written mashups into pages created by Jahia. Also this bulletin board for example is written in PHP. However the page template still needs to be provided as a quite simple JSP.

[url=http/1com/group/sakai-kernel/browse_thread/thread/2d52179e0fdde841#msg_1bd110c9d2bab703:au85ecep]PHP scripting on Quercus should work in Sling[/url:au85ecep]. So if we decide to go that way, a prototype may soon appear in one of the forthcoming community editions.

We surely wish to open Jahia to other templating languages and are open for ideas from the community and of course any help is welcome.

Greetings from Klagenfurt,
Benjamin

Hello Benjamin and greetings from Salzburg!

Thank you very much for your response. I just had a quick look at Apache Sling and also at the development site of Day Software. Sling looks indeed really very promising. Do you have any information concerning a version 7 roadmap for Jahia?

We are now really concidering to use Jahia as our CMS (both OS and commercial) for our clients. As we still have some questions, would a meeting in Klagenfurt or Salzburg be possible?

Best regards and /1) -->

Dietmar
