Jahia Community Edtion (CE) is licensed under the terms of version 2 of the GNU-General Public License.
You can read the GPL at the Free Software Foundation’s website. The Free Software Foundation also provides a detailed FAQ on the GPL.
You can find valuable information in a document created by the Software Freedom Law Center entitled A Practical Guide to GPL Compliance.
You can read information at Jahia’s website.
Jahia offers two products that are licensed under the terms of the JSEL, being the Jahia Standard Edition and the Jahia Professional Edition. You can find more information about these products and how to purchase them on the respective product pages on Jahia’s website.
Jahia makes its software available under both the GPL and a commercial license called the Jahia Sustainable Enterprise License (JSEL). As a result, developers who use or distribute Open Source applications under the GPL can use the GPL-licensed Jahia software, and OEMs, ISVs and VARs that do not want to combine or distribute the Jahia software with their own commercial software under a GPL license can purchase a commercial license. Furthermore, those who purchased a commercial license, can decide to contribute code back to Jahia software and as a reward save on maintenance costs upon approval by Jahia.
Jahia makes its software available under the GPL for use with other GPL-licensed software and FOSS applications licensed under GPL-compatible FOSS licenses.
Jahia offers a commercial license for all of its software that is included or bundled with another application. The Jahia Sustainable Enterprise License allows OEMs, ISVs and VARs to distribute Jahia software with their own commercial software without subjecting that software to the GPL and its requirement to distribute source code.
Jahia makes its software available under both the GPL and a commercial license called the Jahia Sustainable Enterprise License (JSEL). As the matter of fact this conflict could appear only on the Jahia Community Edition as it is licensed under the GPL version 2.
According to the Apache Software Foundation that is compatible, while the Free Software Foundation believes that is not.
If you still have doubt around compatibility between both licenses, Jahia is also available under the JSEL and used as a powerful Web content integration platform in worldwide corporations and Institutions for major Website, Intranet and Portal projects.

No. Given that Jahia CE is non production ready, unsupported and available under GPL at no cost, there is nothing where a contributor could benefit from financial rewards. On the contrary, the advantages of Jahia CE are all about sharing feedback within the Jahia community and having access to advanced features that will later become part of Jahia EE.
Various Jahia customers already chose to contribute commercially developed code based on one of the JSSL-licensed Jahia products back to the community, including:
In 2008, Jahia decided to license Jahia CE under GPL starting from the version 6 branch of the software. Previous versions of the software were available under the Jahia Common Development and Distribution License (JCCDL). The JCCDL has been derived from an approved Open Source license called Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) initially drafted by Sun Microsystems and derived from the well known Mozilla License.
The fact that Jahia did not directly apply an approved Open Source license had caused irritations amongst the Open Source community and discussions whether Jahia is actually a real Open Source software or not.
To foster the growth of the Jahia community and to allow it to focus on the excellent capabilities of Jahia software, Jahia decided to switch for its community edition from JCCDL to GPL from version 6 onwards.
Users of Jahia Standard Edition or Jahia Professional Edition will not be affected by the change, because these editions are being provided under a commercial license.
Users of Jahia software licensed under the JCDDL will need to accept the terms of the GPL or remain on the Jahia 5.x release. Customers that have developed closed source proprietary extensions on top of the earlier JCDDL-licensed editions of Jahia will need to become Jahia Standard Edition or Jahia Professional Edition customers, or remain on Jahia 5.x.
All Jahia partners work with and distribute Jahia Standard Edition or Jahia Professional Edition, hence the rights and responsibilities of Jahia partners are completely unchanged.
