Create a Site

The administration UI looks like the image below. Click on the “Web Project Management” button.

In this interface, administrators can create new projects (empty), import prepackaged projects or import previously exported projects by selecting them on their hard drive.

In order to further explore Jahia, the best solution is certainly to play with a real web site and not to start with a brand new, empty, site. So, we will use the second option and import the “ACME Website Demo 6.5” project by clicking on the “Proceed” button.

The next screen is pre-filled according to the information Jahia has found in the package. We won’t change anything yet, just click on the “Import” button.

Jahia greys out the screen during the import and displays a loading bar. Depending on your computer, this import may take anywhere from less than a minute to several minutes.

Hey, this seems a bit long to create 50 web pages, don’t you think?
Well, not really because when Jahia import this website, it imports:

  • Content (basically hundreds or thousands of text fields)
  • Images (as well as extracting the metadata that comes from the camera with each image)
  • Files (as well as extracting all texts within those documents and indexing them to allow for a full text search)
  • Templates (Jahia copies them into the website directory)
  • Users (the demo comes with a few users registered with rights for this site)
  • And a few other things

The Jahia team will continuously try to improve the speed of such heavy operations, but all things considered, this import is not so long.

Once the import is finished, the grey layer disappears and the page is refreshed, showing a new line for the site we’ve just imported.

We can now leave the Administration tools and start editing our web site. To access the editing UI, click on the “Go to Edit Mode” tab.
