Business Model

A Unique, Stable and Fair Business Model since inception: since 2002, Jahia implemented a dual licensing scheme with Open Source and Free software principles in mind that formed the basis of its fair business practice and growing community.

One software, one product, zero license cost

As a software, Jahia is the same for all our users - community and business users. Same great features, same stability and release cycle with a GPL licensing to foster community-back contribution.

As a product, our Enterprise Jahia subscription provides efficient packages, extensions, tools, support, and services with a sustainable dual licensing (JSEL) and related pricing model, offering the best alternative to business users for their mission critical project.

At zero license cost.

With its dual licensing business mode, its Enterprise Jahia Subscription and software enhancement participation process, Jahia promotes giving back to the Jahia Community.

What makes Jahia's business model unique is that Jahia provides incentives for contributions from its customers for the benefit of the entire Jahia Community: these incentives allow all Jahia’s users of both Enterprise and Community to benefit from third party contributions as well as a constantly growing code-base as well as in our JahiApps Forge.

This enterprise contribution management through our Enterprise Jahia Subscription is the reason why Jahia calls its permissive commercial license the "Jahia Sustainable Enterprise License" and its overall licensing scheme "Sustainable Dual Licensing".

Business Model

"By creating the Contribute or Pay paradigm, we found a way to provide incentives for Jahia customers to contribute back through an Enterprise Jahia Subscription as well as software enhancement participation. As a software, Jahia is the same for all our users - community and business users. Same great features, same stability and release cycle with a GPL licensing for community-back contribution. As a product, our Enterprise Jahia subscription provides efficient packages, extensions, tools, support, and services with a sustainable dual licensing and related pricing model, offering the best alternative to business users for their mission critical project. These well balanced sources of contribution allow Jahia to constantly augment its Research and Development effort."

Fostering Software Contribution

Software Enhancement Financial Benefits

When a client requires a generic development that the Jahia product team sees as an improvement for the community, she will be able to initiate this development. This software evolution will be included within the next version of the product. Integrated as a generic development in the Jahia software roadmap, this improvement will be part of the software, supported at no additional cost within an Enterprise Jahia Subscription and may be again enhanced by another community member. Compared to the cost of a specific development or - worse - a fork of an entire project such as Jahia, this unique alternative offered by our open source business model provides obvious benefits and ROI for customers who are willing to enhance the software they use. Those contributing customers also gain perpetual usage right of related Enterprise Jahia instances for which the software evolution applies.

The Contribute or Pay paradigm is a stable and well-balanced software development and business model for all members of Jahia's business ecosystem, leveraging the Open Source contribution model and best practices, but adapting them to the actual needs and guaranties of business and mission critical projects.

Long Term Subscriptions

Jahia's customers tend to expand their Jahia deployment year after year.

Jahia rewards the fidelity of those who acquired an Enterprise Jahia Subscription with a three years commitment. Jahia considers this long term commitment for unlimited production bug fixes as a contribution to the overall software stability. With a three-year upfront acquisition, the usage right for the Enterprise Jahia used in production becomes perpetual, starting on the first day, and no matter what version of the software the customer is using at the end of this period of time.

In other words, if the customer decides to stop subscription payments, she will still be able to use Enterprise Jahia in her production environment (of course, without all the benefits of the Enterprise Jahia Subscription).
